The Summer Book - Tove Jansson, Esther Freud, Thomas Teal
A quiet depiction of the emotional life of a very old woman and a very young girl, in the setting of a small northern island. Pitch-perfect right to the end. Besides the exquisite last chapter, I think the one about the tent and the memories of scouting spoke to me most, but there were too many great chapters to name.

This book has the same structure as The Curve of Time (episodic, many summers blended indistinguishably into one, ending with the end of summer), but I like this one much better; for one thing, the other practically has no human characters.
