I Capture The Castle - Dodie Smith

A wonderful, juicy comic novel from 1930s England. There's no malice in its soul and everything about it is fresh. In the course of this story an impoverished genteel family (they literally were starving at the start of the story) finds its way to prosperity, and various problems are solved for a likable cast of characters. But the real focus of the novel is the growth to adulthood of the teenage narrator, Cassandra, as she learns about the people around her, develops her writing skills, says goodbye to various aspects of her childhood, falls in love and has her heart broken, and sets out to an uncertain future; but the readers can tell that she's already strong and wise and will only get more so.
