The Grapes of Wrath - John Steinbeck
Excellent; still entertaining and thought-provoking decades after I first read it in high school. I find I have less patience with the high-flown poetical chapters than I did, though, and would far rather get back to the Joads. But Steinbeck can somehow put some pretty fancy sentiments in the mouths of his characters, too, in more natural-sounding language.
